Explicit Nonparametric Confidence Intervals for the Variance with Guaranteed Coverage

چکیده
_________________________________________________________________ In this paper, we provide a method for constructing confidence intervals for the variance that exhibit guaranteed coverage probability for any sample size, uniformly over a wide class of probability distributions. In contrast, standard methods achieve guaranteed coverage only in the limit for a fixed distribution or for any sample size over a very restrictive (parametric) class of probability distributions. Of course, it is impossible to construct effective confidence intervals for the variance without some restriction, due to a result of Bahadur and Savage (1956). However, it is possible if the observations lie in a fixed compact set. We also consider the case of lower confidence bounds without any support restriction. Our method is based on the behavior of the variance over distributions that lie within a Kolmogorov-Smirnov confidence band for the underlying distribution. The method is a generalization of an idea of Anderson (1967), who considered only the case of the mean; it applies to very general parameters, and particularly the variance. While typically it is not clear how to compute these intervals explicitly, for the special case of the variance we provide an algorithm to do so. Asymptotically, the length of the intervals is of order n in probability), so that, while providing guaranteed coverage, they are not overly conservative. A small simulation study examines the finite sample behavior of the proposed intervals. _________________________________________________________________________

Exact maximum coverage probabilities of confidence intervals with increasing bounds for Poisson distribution mean
A Poisson distribution is well used as a standard model for analyzing count data. So the Poisson distribution parameter estimation is widely applied in practice. Providing accurate confidence intervals for the discrete distribution parameters is very difficult. So far, many asymptotic confidence intervals for the mean of Poisson distribution is provided. It is known that the coverag...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Comparison of Approximate Tolerance Intervals for the Poisson Distribution
The problem of finding tolerance intervals receives very much attention of researchers and are widely used in various statistical fields, including biometry, economics, reliability analysis and quality control. Tolerance interval is a random interval that covers a specified proportion of the population with a specified confidence level. In this paper, we compare approximate tolerance interva...
متن کاملOn the Effect of Bias Estimation on Coverage Accuracy in Nonparametric Estimation∗
This paper studies the effect of bias correction on confidence interval estimators in the context of kernel-based nonparametric density estimation. We consider explicit plug-in bias correction but, in contrast to standard approaches, we allow the bias estimator to (potentially) have a first-order impact on the distributional approximation. This approach is meant to more accurately capture the f...
متن کاملCalibrating Confidence Coefficients
Two approaches for dealing with the problem of poor coverage probabilities of certain standard confidence intervals are proposed. The first is a recommendation that the actual coverage be estimated irectly from the data and its value reported in addition to the nominal level. This is achieved through a combination of computer simulation and density estimation. The asymptotic validity of the pro...
متن کاملSmoothing Variance Estimates for Price Indexes Over Time
This paper explores the possibility of developing generalized variances for price indexes by applying nonparametric scatterplot smoothers to time series of point variance estimates. The goal here is to formulate smoothed variances which are approximately unbiased, which provide acceptable confidence interval coverage, and which are more stable than the point variance estimates. Smoothing method...
